Warsh's Second Test Lands at 2pm ET

The FOMC concludes today with a decision at 2:00 PM ET and a Kevin Warsh press conference at 2:30. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its interest rate decision on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at 2:00 PM ET. Consensus says hold. The interesting part is what sits underneath it.

The Fed held at 3.50%–3.75% on 17 June in a unanimous 12–0 vote, but the updated dot plot turned hawkish: the median year-end 2026 rate moved to 3.8% from 3.4% in March — a flip from a projected cut to an implied hike. Nine of eighteen officials penciled in at least one rise this year, and seventeen of eighteen judged inflation risks tilted to the upside. There is no SEP this meeting, so the statement language and the presser are the entire signal.

Crypto is positioning for it, not front-running it. BTC traded around $63,933 (+0.27%) and ETH around $1,922 (+1.56%), with the market still in post-correction consolidation and $64,000 the resistance level to watch. Total market cap sits near $2.28 trillion and the fear gauge is stuck at 29. Thin books plus a hawkish surprise is how you get a violent move on a boring headline.

Iran Fired. The Interceptors Worked. Oil Didn't Care.

Late Tuesday, CENTCOM said IRGC forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on US forces in the Middle East at 5:45 PM ET, and that all missiles were intercepted. Zero damage. The market repriced anyway.

WTI futures jumped roughly 4.4% to $82.73 a barrel after the announcement, reversing a session that had settled lower as Iran held Strait of Hormuz discussions with Saudi Arabia and Oman. Earlier Tuesday, WTI had dropped 3.3% to $79.87 and Brent fell 3.9% to $84.91 on hopes the fighting pause would hold. A full round trip inside one session.

This is the Fed's actual problem, and it arrived twelve hours before the decision. Crude futures are up roughly 20% for July, which will keep headline inflation readings hot in the near term. Goldman's Tuesday note argued Brent should moderate toward $80 by year-end if Hormuz fully reopens, while flagging Red Sea disruption and attacks on Saudi infrastructure as fresh upside risk. Warsh has to write a statement about energy-driven inflation without knowing whether the ceasefire survives the week.

Apple Touches $5 Trillion by Doing Less

Apple's market cap briefly passed $5 trillion on Tuesday for the first time, making it only the second company ever to hit that mark after Nvidia. At a session high of $342.89, its market value stood at $5.036 trillion before shares pared back to $337.70.

The story is not the milestone. It's why. Apple shares are up 25% this year as investors move away from the hyperscaler story built on heavy AI capital expenditure. While Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft collectively pour hundreds of billions into AI build-outs, Apple has kept capex low and leans on Google's cloud infrastructure and AI technology. Apple's fiscal 2025 capex totaled $12.7 billion; Alphabet plans to spend $205 billion this year.

The market is now paying a premium for capital discipline and a discount for AI conviction. The narrative flipped on concern that aggressive spenders are raising debt and running cash-flow negative without a clear return path. Nvidia is up roughly 6% this year against Apple's 25%. Apple reports Thursday — Tim Cook's last quarter before John Ternus takes over on September 1. Watch whether the discipline thesis survives the guidance.

Washington Comes for the Tax-Loss Harvest

Republican Rep. Jodey Arrington of Texas introduced the Applying Existing Tax Anti-Abuse Rules to Digital Assets Act in June, which would subject crypto transactions to wash sale rules. The renewed push got fresh attention yesterday, and unusually, it looks bipartisan.

Here is the mechanic being closed. Wash sale rules stop investors from selling a security at a loss and immediately rebuying it while still claiming the tax break. Crypto has never been covered, so investors can effectively harvest the loss without ever divesting the position. Section 1091 covers stocks and securities, and the IRS classifies crypto as property — which is why you can sell a losing coin, buy it back the same day, and keep the loss.

The timing is the tell. Bitcoin has lost roughly half its value since October 2025, meaning 2026 is shaping up as the largest harvesting year in crypto's history — and Treasury estimated in 2024 that applying the rule to digital assets would raise nearly $24 billion over a decade. Democrats tried this during the pandemic era; a Republican sponsor changes the arithmetic. Assume current rules for year-end planning, but do not build a strategy that only works while Congress stays distracted.

Lido Is Quietly Shrinking Ethereum by a Third

Lido began consolidating more than 8 million ETH — roughly $16 billion — onto Ethereum's larger post-Pectra 0x02 validators on Monday, in its biggest Core protocol upgrade since V2. More than 265,000 validators will migrate, and Lido estimates Ethereum's total validator count could fall from about 880,000 to roughly 628,000.

Attestation volume — a persistent source of consensus-layer congestion — is expected to drop by about 29% once complete. The share of staked ETH on compounding validators rises to about 52% from 32%. One protocol's internal housekeeping is a network-level event, which is precisely the concentration problem critics have flagged for years, now demonstrated rather than argued.

The governance change matters more than the plumbing. For the first time in Lido's five-year history, curated operators must lock ETH bonds behind their performance — all 34 are expected to transition, with none planning to exit. Reputation gets replaced by collateral. Staking rewards decline roughly 0.28% during the transition, and the migration will run for months. Meanwhile the flow picture stays split: spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a net $11.64 million outflow on July 27 while Ethereum funds took in $9.23 million.
